Slideshow Projection Night in Las 200 Viviendas, Roquetas de Mar, Almería.
May 2024
Public presentation of “Ni un hogar sin lumbre, ni una familia sin pan” in the Central Square of Las 200.
In May of this year I took part in a very special event, the first presentation in Almería of the project I have been working on
for the last few years, ‘Ni un hogar sin lumbre...’ .We made a public slideshow projection in the central square of Las 2o0 Viviendas and everyone who was interested was invited. Before the projection we had a performance by Tropa Europea (Djon, Guetta, Biggy and Maikel); after the projection we used the screen and the speaker to play some music videos from the abundant local talent that exists in the Poniente Almeriense. I was very grateful to be able to carry out this idea and bring my photos back to Almeria and
reconnect with friends and make new ones.
I was able to carry out this activity thanks to the support of the EFFEA grants, European Funds for Emerging Artists.
Fulbright fellowship
2022-23
This summer i was awarded a Fulbright scholarship as a visiting researcher in the US. Its a program for independent research and artistic production that is allowing me to undertake a study on several foundational archives in the field of Documentary Photography. On the other hand, I will be conducting my own project and will be photographing in California's Central Valley from February through June 2023.
At the moment, I am based in New York City, doing an internship at the Department of Archive and Production in Magnum Photos. I am also starting my research on the Farm Security Administration/OWI collection at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, which I visit once a week.
This program is co-financed by the Fulbright Program and Xunta de Galicia.
Exhibition: Percorrer o Tempo. Visións do Camiño.
2021-22
An itinerant street installation in main cities in Galicia during 2022. On the subject of the Camiño de Santiago pilgrimage that has its end in Santiago de Compostela.
You can visit these days, now in Lugo, Praza da Horta, since the 10th of January. Organized by Xacobeo 21-22 and Xunta de Galicia. Curated by Nicolás Combarro and coordinated by Eva Seijas, with works by fellow photographers: Luis Díaz, Olivia Arthur, Lúa Ribeira, Cristina de Middel, Miguel Ángel Tornero, André Cepeda, Michel LeBelhomme, Carla Andrade and Iván Nespereira.
For Unha forza do pasado (A force from the past), I focused on the Mozarabic route that starts in southern Andalucía and ends in northern Galicia. I traced an imaginary space inspired by the very Christian and Classical mythologies that sustain the idiosyncrasy of the path. Through a series of encounters along the route, I attempted to recreate these ancestral ideas that seem perishing but still very alive.
Newport Live Lab
October 23rd, 2021
1st - 31st of October 2021
Diffusion Photo Festival, Wales, UK.
2, 43 Friars Walk Mall, Newport NP20 1DP
I’m sharing some details of a recent group exhibition I took part in: Newport Live Lab, within the Diffusion Photography Festival, Wales.
I exhibited alongside fellow photographers Clementine Schneidermann, Daragh Soden, Fergus Thomas, Lúa Ribeira, Michael Alberry, Sebastián Bruno, under the curatorship of Isaac Blease.
“Newport/Lab is an exhibition by a group of photographers who all lived together during their studies on the Documentary Photography course at the University of South Wales in Newport (now Cardiff). The show is broken into three stages; firstly the displaying of pictures made during their studies, secondly a live-laboratory in which the group returned to Newport to make new images, and then finally the exhibition resulting from work made, printed and installed during the live lab.” (Isaac Blease, Curator).
My response to this draft was based on the previous work I did in Newport and South Wales in 2014. Walking through the same places, streets, locations, attempting to portray the town six years later with a new energy. Previous work I made in Newport focussed on places of social interaction, many indoors, moving around with my car oftenly and getting to other towns such as Port Talbot. This time due to covid-19 restrictions I had to change that method, walking around in Newport area looking for places and people that allowed to represent the place and the time.
Below, some photographs of the exhibition and the process of the Lab.
“Un fermoso porvir”
(Un hermoso porvenir)
XVIII Festival Internacional de Cine Santiago de Compostela
October 2-10, 2021
Artist Residency, Cuarto Pexigo
I was invited by the Film Festival Curtocircuito as an artist in residency during one week in Santiago de Compostela. The aim was to create a series of images that challenged the stereotypical touristic representation of the city in the media.
I carried out a research about the peripheral areas of the city, which are part of its green belt and produced a series of photographs entitled “Un fermoso porvir” (A beautiful future), a phrase pronounced in one of the "toasts" recited at the Conxo Banquet, held in an oak grove on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela in March 1856. A romantic act of fraternisation between workers, students and artisans in which students, from a higher social class, served as waiters to the artisans and workers, as a symbol of respect and equality. As if it were a secular liturgy, these toasts made epic allusions to nature, social prosperity, freedom and a series of values and enthusiastic ideas encouraged by the political climate brought about by the brief Progressive Biennium in which the aim was to reform the political system of the reign of Isabel II of Bourbon. In the current moment of crisis and uncertainty resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and the country's own political situation, I found this historical reference interesting for various reasons, as if it were a mirror or a window to look out of and take a breath of fresh air.
During the residency week I stayed at Cuarto Pexigo, a wonderful house-studio located in the heart of Belvís park.
Below you can have a look at a gallery with some of the photos of the work.
